In 2007, I packed up my life in South Africa and moved across the globe to a country I never visited before to call it home for a year august. I’d simply graudated after four years at university and chose to go on to Southern Korea to instruct English at a primary college.

In those days, young graduates groing through into the eastern to be English teachers was simply just becoming popular. Having attended an all-girls school and at college, I’ve prided myself on being open-minded about individuals and countries. I’ve for ages been enthusiastic about people and once you understand about social structures in society.

The social groups I have associated with over the years have always been diverse while racism is still a prevalent topic in South Africa. Growing up, I never belonged to a clique. I’d buddies of different events, countries and religions. As a result of this, I’ve learnt to embrace individuals from all parts of society and also have learned to empathize with buddies and strangers alike.

Settling into my brand brand new ‘home’

Once I found its way to Korea, I’d to get accustomed a lot of different things – food, language, respect for authority and basic social aspects this is certainly typical of Asian countries. Something different I experienced to have used to had been being stared at, whether close to my neighbourhood, from the coach or subway or whenever I was at a restaurant with my colleagues.

We are now living in a populous city an hour or so out of the center of Seoul – Korea’s money town. Foreigners in Seoul are certainly quite normal to see, specially throughout the weekends. Numerous English instructors and American soldiers flock to an area called Itaewon, which caters mostly into the foreign populace. It’s situated near the US Military Base and foreigners will enjoy typical Western meals and don’t have any issue with interaction, because so many of the Koreans employed in Itaewon can talk English fairly well.

My town is quite different and seeing foreigners around here also makes me “sit up and look”. In your community that We reside in, i understand that we now have a couple of Bangladeshi’s and Sri Lankans whom operate Halaal stores. We don’t see them usually and alson’t really communicated together with them. I actually do, nonetheless, have the periodic stare and whenever I’m call at Seoul, We sometimes also get whistled at.
